Ubuntu 24.04 darktable Backup and Restore Guide

If you use darktable for photo editing on Ubuntu 24.04, regularly backing up your custom settings ensures that you can quickly restore your personalized environment after switching computers or reinstalling the system.

1. Backup darktable Settings

Starting from Ubuntu 20.04, darktable’s configuration files are no longer stored in ~/.config/darktable/ but have been moved to the Snap application-specific path:

/home/user/snap/darktable/

This folder may contain multiple version directories. Choose the one with the highest number (latest version), for example:

/home/user/snap/darktable/291/

Key Files to Backup:

  • darktablerc: darktable interface settings
  • data.db: Stores custom function parameters
  • library.db: Likely contains image library information, such as imported images, tags, and editing history
  • shortcutsrc: Custom shortcut key settings

2. Restore darktable Settings

After switching computers or reinstalling the system, simply copy the backed-up files back to the corresponding directory to restore your personal settings.

Reminder: Ensure that darktable is not running to avoid conflicts when overwriting files.
